Growing Minds is a comprehensive guide to Baker & Taylor’s juvenile selections featuring titles appropriate for all interest levels, from toddlers through young adults. Published 10 times a year, each issue of Growing Minds contains special collections that cover a variety of subjects of interest. In the January 2019 edition, they featured a Publisher Spotlight on Mel Sauder & MVP Kids.
Growing Minds: Why children’s media and why start with books?
Mel Sauder: Media is a significant influencer in society today. And most of it is, at best, entertainment for entertainment’s sake. MVP Kids is about enriching kids’ entertainment and through it, intentionally inspiring character in families and their children. We began by developing a diverse group of kids, each one growing up in our books. Books came first in our business plan because reading with children is not only important to cultivate literacy, but it develops long-term parent-child relationships. Research proves reading with children to be a significant factor in their long-term success. We want reading with kids to be fun and entertaining but infused with a character-inspiring purpose. Strategically, our books provide the foundation for our apps, future interactive games and other media. Our books even provide the scripts for our work toward future MVP Kids television programming.
